Shooting Star Ornament
Shooting Star Ornament
Crafted by Malian refugees living in Burkina Faso
This star is a shining example of the metalworking skills of Tuareg artisans. For these nomadic pastoralists, who traditionally live in the Sahara Desert, stars in the night sky are navigational tools.

About the craftsmanship
The traditionally nomadic Tuareg of northern Mali are renowned for their fine craftsmanship. In the Tuareg culture, artisans belong to a heredity ‘closed’ caste which includes blacksmiths, leatherworkers, and jewellers – they are artisans at birth. As a result, Tuareg pieces carry the motifs of countless generations, and serve as a repository of Tuareg heritage and culture.
